Saint-Luc hike

November 2022

On November 19th, 2022 we made a circular trail starting in the St. Luc parking and going up to Tignousa. When it's open, you can also go up with the St-Luc – Tignousa Funiculaire, check the opening year times here

Here are some important details to know before embarking on this hike:

Description

To start the hike to Tignousa, head towards Saint-Luc and follow the signs. The trail begins at the village center, taking you through wooden houses and a lush forest, which was covered in snow when we went in November. The moderately difficult hike gradually inclines, and some points of the trail were deep in snow. However, we were able to continue walking with our high-impermeable boots. The trail becomes icier as you approach the top of Tignousa, so be cautious. If you have extra time, take a longer way back by continuing straight towards the east direction, but keep in mind that the trail can be quite snowy and slippery in the afternoon when the sun is no longer shining on that side (do not need to worry about this in warmer months). When you're ready to head back, follow the same trail down to St Luc. You can see a representation of our trail below!

At the top of Tignousa, you will find a hotel, restaurant, park, and an observatory (more information about the observatory can be found in this section of my blog). Tignousa offers various activities depending on the season, such as skiing in winter and hiking, biking, or following The Planet Trail in summer. The Planets Trail is a 4.5km representation of our solar system, stretching from the arrival of the funicular at Tignousa to the Hotel Weisshorn. Each planet is represented on a reduced scale, making it a fun and educational walk suitable for the whole family.

This is the pathway we were following. If you come in late autumn, bring impermeable shoes!

We were rewarded with this views from the Alps

This is a map (left) of our round trip hike from St-Luc to Tignousa, with the colors indicating the elevation of the trail and the numbers indicating the kilometers. We got lost and had to backtrack between kilometers 4-5, so I recommend using the Switzerland Mobility app to avoid getting lost. Please note that I started recording my watch a bit late. The parking is located at the 12th kilometer and Tignousa is located at the 7th kilometer. Feel free to use this as a sample for your hike.
